Is one manic episode enough for a Bipolar Disorder diagnosis?

I have to say even one clear cut manic episode in a patient with is often enough to merit a diagnosis of manic depression or bipolar disorder. I might have wondered why a mood stabiliser such as lithium might not have been added as this would also reduce the risk of depressive episodes.
